Can I Do Exercise (X,Y,Z) On My Rest Day?

Happy Monday everyone! How did you spend your Sunday? We here at GMB took it easy. We relaxed with our families, went for leisurely walks…

And how is this relevant? Well, dear readers, today we’d like to talk about the concept of rest. It’s pretty common for us to receive questions in our inbox that ask about how to incorporate interval training, weight lifting, and other intense forms of exercise on the recovery days of our programs.

Here’s what Ryan had to say on the subject:

So please tell us you’ve been honoring the rest days! It’s great to stay consistent and committed to your fitness routines, but you don’t want to burn out, and you’ll actually progress faster if you allow your body the time to recover. Remember that everything in life is a balance, and excessive exercise definitely falls into that “too much of a good thing” category. Remember what you’re getting fit for (what’s your purpose for fitness?), and then go do that on your recovery days! Have fun!

What’s your favorite way to rest and relax on your recovery days?

Hi Ryan, great tips as always. Make sure you make the most of your chill out family time….! Weather is finally turning hot here in Sydney, loving the fact I get to wake up with the sunrise and work with some really good clients. Hope you don’t mind, already adapted a couple of your gymnastic tips and added a few small twists to make them worthy of the eyelid Commando test procedure!! Loving your work, especially the background video noises you seem to be able to manufacture at will. The hurricane on the handstand video and the little girl screaming on the rings 1 promo..!! Didn’t realise your fan base was so big that it included teen girls…!

    • @RealCommandoShire So, i get the hint about the background noises in the vids being a distraction. Especially since you’ve mentioned it in all of your comments. I’ll be more careful in future videos.

Give em hell with the Eyelid Commando test! That’s Trademarked, Copyrighted, Registered, and even approved by the Motion Picture Association of the United States btw. ; )

Isn’t it good to be ‘on the move’ though? I thought light activity is recommended on off days. I imagine a nice walk or swim wouldn’t be a bad thing. Also I’m not saying I want to powerlift on off days, but what about a 20-30 minute jog on 3 out of my 4 (P1) off days? Would that be too much do you think? It would be a mixture of walking and jogging working up to a 30 minute non-stop jog as the weeks progressed. Following http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml program. If you think this isn’t ok with P1, I wont do it but I wanted your thoughts anyway.

    • @madknight Oh yeah, a walk or a swim is no problem. A jog should be fine if you’re into that sort of thing. Just don’t push it. Don’t do so much that it makes you tired. Active recovery is a good thing as long as it remains helps your recovery and doesn’t hinder your progress.
